A Spanish temporary residence permit is issued for a limited period and needs to be renewed before it expires, otherwise you risk losing your legal status in Spain. Renewal is not automatic: the authorities check that the conditions which justified the original permit are still met, for example that your company is still active or that you still meet the income requirements of your route.

Renewal applications are usually reviewed against the same standard as the original permit, so a business that has gone quiet, filed late accounts or shows falling activity can create real difficulty at renewal time even if the first permit was approved without issue. This is why we treat renewal as an ongoing responsibility, not a one-off filing every couple of years.

We help clients avoid missed deadlines and rejected renewals by:

  • Tracking the expiry date and starting the renewal file with enough lead time
  • Updating the supporting documents: company accounts, tax filings, proof of activity or income
  • Preparing and submitting the renewal application to the correct immigration office
  • Following up on the case until the new permit and TIE card are issued

If your business situation has changed since the original permit was granted, for example if the company was sold or you moved from self-employment to a company structure, tell us early. It affects which documents the renewal needs, and in some cases how it should be filed. We also support ongoing accounting so the financial records required for renewal stay in order between filings, rather than being reconstructed under time pressure right before the deadline.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start my Spanish residence permit renewal?
We recommend starting at least two to three months before expiry, since gathering updated company or income documents and getting an appointment can take longer than expected, especially at busy immigration offices.

What happens if my residence permit expires before renewal is approved?
Filing the renewal application before expiry generally protects your legal status while the file is processed, which is exactly why tracking the deadline and filing on time matters more than the outcome of the renewal itself.

Does renewal require the same documents as the first application?
Broadly yes, but updated: current company accounts or income proof rather than the original business plan, since renewal is judged on whether the activity is still real and ongoing.
